New Extempo Champion to be Crowned
The preliminary round of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation {TUCO} National Extempo Championship takes place on Monday 21st February 2011 from 8:00 PM
Venue is the new Kaiso House Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.
Extempo preliminary is one of the more exciting events in the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. Picture an open arena where the singers showcase their lyrical agility as they compete against each other for a place in the final on Terrific Thursday 03rd March 2011.
This year a new champion will be crowned because the reigning Monarch - Winston Gypsy Peters will not be defending. He is, however, scheduled to make a special guest appearance.
The contestants draw for numbers to determine their order of appearance. They would then draw from a pool in order to select a topic and compose four verses on the spot, that is, extemporaneously. This is followed by a lyrical “shoot out” where singers claim bragging rights as they attempt to conquer and destroy their opponent – free styling.
This year’s Extempo Preliminary round boasts a number of former champions including Sheldon John, Black Sage and Lingo.
