Panorama 2010 registration is underway. Steelbands interested in participating in the National Panorama 2010 competitions are reminded that they have until Saturday 11 July 2009 to register. Panorama is the most prestigious event staged by Pan Trinbago Inc. with three (3) rounds of competition, i.e. Preliminary Round which takes place in the respective panyards, the Semi Finals and the Finals during the Carnival season.

June 10, 2009--Brooklyn, New York: WACK's youngest 'Culture Pot' fan Brandon K. Cooper receives the President's Education Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, signed by President Barrack Obama. On the same night Brandon also received an award for Chorus from his school P.S. 203 Floyd Bennett in Brooklyn. Congratulations to Brandon and his family. Keep up the good work as you move into middle school next term.
Caribbean Games affected by H1N1-swine flu
The inaugural Caribbean Games 2009 originally scheduled for July 13-18 in Trinidad and Tobago has been cancelled. Due to H1N1 pandemic status, and the rate at which the virus is spreading; Minister Gary Hunt said they were forced to cancel the event. Originally a postponement was thought possible, but Minister Hunt said there is no slot to fit it in. The Caribbean Games would have had athletes from 40 countries, and concerns were that it could be a breeding ground for the virus, and could expose the T&T population even further. A new date has not been set as yet.
In related news.....officials are also looking at whether the Meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of State scheduled for November 2009, and even Carnival 2010 should be postponed or cancelled. This was disclosed by Health Minister Jerry Narace.
A Trini receives community service award in Miami
Sistrunk Historical Festival, the oldest historically black festival in Florida—and the country—awarded T&T national Andy Ansola with the Community Service Award for 2008, Ansola, who migrated to the US in 1989 to further his education, joined four other recipients at the Awards’ sixth annual Sistrunk Historical Festival Gala, for his outstanding work in the South Florida community.
Ansola, a former police officer, is entrenched in every segment of this multicultural community. As an activist, he is one of the leaders in the Caribbean community and is an avid volunteer in many activities in South Florida. Ansola sits on the Broward County Diversity Advisory Board, which allows him access to all the government officials and decision makers without much ado. In addition, he sits on many other boards and committees too numerous to mention. He has worked in collaboration with Broward and Miami Dade County Public Schools in creating programmes benefitting the underserved children in underserved communities.
“Andy is a people person who enjoys every ounce of what he does,” said Margaret Birch, who is the seated Chair of Sistrunk Historical Festival Incorporated. Birch added: “He is always willing to help when called upon. He is most deserving of this award.” After relocating from New York to Florida, Ansola in 1992 graduated valedictorian from St Thomas University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later went to earn his Masters Degree in Science at the same institution. After starting to pursue his PhD studies at Nova Southeastern in Davie, Ansola took a sabbatical in order to work on a community project.
Andy believes in giving back to society. “I thank the Sistrunk Historical Festival Committee for making a public recognition of God’s secret work.” says Ansola, who is proud to call himself a Christian. “Changing lives and awakening the sleeping genius in people is my way of giving back to society, with the gifts that God has blessed and favoured me with.” For more than 25 years, Sistrunk has provided programming that has furthered an awareness of the contributions of people of African descent.
